Throwback Thursday: John Arne Riise’s rocket versus Manchester United

Nothing stirs the blood like a Liverpool versus Manchester United match. The fixture between the two sides is truly the Derby of England due to the history, coaches, players, and trophies that have been won by the two clubs.

In the build-up to this Sunday’s game between second-placed Liverpool and first-placed Manchester United, we take a look back nearly 20 years to November 2001 when John Arne Riise’s rocket helped the Reds claim a 3-1 win at Anfield.

Heading into the game, Liverpool were fourth in the Premier League under manager Gerard Houllier. After the club’s 3-1 win, Liverpool moved into second place while Sir Alex Ferguson’s team were fourth.

Liverpool finished the 2001-02 season second behind Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal. The Reds collected 80 points to Arsenal’s 87. Meanwhile, Manchester United were third with 77.
