In case you missed the recent announcement, former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano retired from football.
Mascherano was the first of a Liverpool trio of players to depart the club for Barcelona. Years later, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho followed suit. Unfortunately, due to Mascherano’s success at Barcelona, it is easy to forget just how good he was for Liverpool.
The Argentine midfielder joined Liverpool on loan in 2007 after spending the first half of the Premier League campaign on West Ham’s bench. Mascherano arrived in England after stints with River Plate and Corinthians.
He became an immediate star at Liverpool but his time at Anfield was short. Mascherano left in August 2010, leaving a defensive midfield void that was only filled with the arrival of Fabinho in 2018.
